Why giga projects matter for contractors
Under Vision 2030, Saudi Arabia is building new cities, resorts, housing and entertainment destinations at the same time. These programmes need large numbers of experienced engineers, project and construction managers, planners, quantity surveyors, HSE and QA/QC specialists and document controllers, often on 6 to 12 month contracts that are renewed as phases move on.
Who hires
The client (the developer) usually appoints project management consultancies, design firms and main contractors, who then hire contractors directly or through outsourcing agencies. That is why so many giga project openings are posted on LinkedIn by recruiters at consultancies and agencies, with the project name in the first line.
Packages and site life
Rates are usually quoted per month in SAR. Some offers are all inclusive, others add housing, transport, a remote site allowance and flights home. On remote sites such as NEOM and the Red Sea, contractors often live in project accommodation and work on a rotation.
Iqama, accreditation and Saudization
Your sponsor applies for your work visa and iqama. Engineers usually need Saudi Council of Engineers (SCE) accreditation, and some professions are reserved for Saudi nationals under Saudization rules. Check the requirements in each post before you apply.
This guide gives general information based on public sources. Programmes, rules and requirements change: always check the details in each job and with the hiring company.
Mostly through project management consultancies (PMC), design and engineering firms, main contractors and outsourcing agencies. The firm that hires you sponsors your residence permit (iqama) and pays your monthly salary or rate for the length of the assignment.
Do engineers need to register in Saudi Arabia?
Yes. Engineers working in Saudi Arabia usually need professional accreditation with the Saudi Council of Engineers (SCE), and the employer or sponsor generally handles it with you as part of the visa process.
What does a giga project package include?
It varies. Packages are often quoted as a monthly amount in SAR, either all inclusive or split into basic salary and allowances for housing and transport. Remote sites often add accommodation on site, a site allowance and rotation flights. Always ask for the full breakdown.
Are some roles reserved for Saudi nationals?
Saudization rules (the Nitaqat programme) set quotas of Saudi nationals by sector and company size, and some professions are reserved for Saudi nationals. Recruiters often say in their post when a role is open to Saudi nationals only.
Are giga projects still hiring?
Yes, but the scope and timing of some programmes have been revised over time, and hiring moves between projects and phases. Freelance Radar shows the contract jobs that are actually posted right now.
